I went on an interview today in a local car dealership. The manager who interviewed me seemed to think that I was the right candidate for the job, but he could not hire me on the spot because he was obligated to interview until friday (the ad went out yesterday, and I was the second one to interview). The dealership uses a code name (Mr. Smith) in reference to employment inquiries. The gentleman who interviewed told me that he is Mr. Smith. He also gave me his name, (however, I only remember his first name is Ted) and I don't want to make a bad impression by not using the right name. My question is, what name do I use in my thank you letter? Do I use Mr. Smith, or should I call the dealership and find out his correct spelling of his last name? (already checked their website and there is no mention of any of the managers names.) Thank you in advance. :)

There are several ways to approach this situation.

1. Send the card to Mr. Smith. I don't personally advise this one as it very ambiguous and since you met with the man it is best to address the card to him.

2. If Ted did not give you a business card, call the front desk and ask for his last name. If she asks, tell her your name and let her know you met with him. If she insists you use Mr. Smith - then that's what you do.

3. Personally go in and drop off the thank you card addressed to just Ted. They may call him to the front desk while you are there so be prepared. More than likely they won't...but be sure to wear interview attire - just in case. I have done this in the past and have been introduced to other people while I was there. This is a good way to make a great impression. This will show them you are serious about working for them and they will remember you.

If you decide to mail the card, mail it today so it arrives by Wednesday.

If you decide to drop off the card yourself, do it tomorrow otherwise if you do it today, it may make you look desperate. ;-)

Good luck!

call and see if you can find out the actual full name of the interviewer. if the company has a code name state the reason for inquiring and ask what *particular* person should the letter be addressed to...

Personability helps and it shows that were diligent and appreciative to inquire...helps them to remember you.

I would call the dealership and ask the receptionist his last name.

a letter of thanks is a normal way of networking. this is accepted in the business industry. it is not thought of as good or bad, but it usually will keep your resume in the file longer for future reference and hires.
