wow, that's a deep thought. it could be, but a hostage situation involves one person holding another against their will, threatening harm against them unless demands of some sort are met. (sounds good) but a suicide is threatening only themselves. most people with split personalities aren't always aware of their other personalities. each person just disappears as the other takes over. (go watch sybil. good movie.) so one personality doesn't really have the option to threaten another. unless that person has the power to switch between personalities, then it could be a hostage situation if personality fred says "ill never let personality ted come back ever again unless you give into my demands", then in that case, it would be a hostage situation.

Interesting! No it wouldnt be a hostage situation. The person with the split personality is still just one lone person. For there to be a hostage situation there has to be a captor and his/her prisoners.

That's supposed to be funny is it? Just hope there aren't any sufferers in Yahoo Answers reading that.
Sorry I have a sense of humour and do believe most things are ok to poke fun at but even I draw the line somewhere.
Oh well there goes any chance I might have for best answer but then who cares? :)

let's carry this a bit further: suppose the suicide was completed. then would that not be a case of murder? and how would the authorities charge the individual who did the killing.
i would like to see a case like this on Law and Order.
