Pro's trade at both times. But if they were to pick one, most will trade the close. The reason is, by then they've determined market direction and can position before the next day or close out positions they don't want to carry overnight.

The second most popular time is amateur hour where many pros like to fade the gap and trade against the amateurs opening the market.

Hope that helps!

Right at the open is a good time to short stocks, because of all the buy orders that come in overnight to buy at the open. At the close is not a good time to buy because there is no telling what might happen overnight.

I am not a pro trader; but if I were, I would watch the market about 15 minutes after the open and see which way it is tending. If up I would buy high beta stocks, if down I would sell high beta stocks. Or perhaps even the calls and puts. I would liquidate all of my positions before the close, unless there has been some positive news on a particular holding or the stock is in a solid uptrend, or downtrend on shorts.

The old adage is 'amateurs trade the open, pros trade the close'.

The reason behind that is that retail or amateur investors enter their buy orders in the evening when the market is closed, and many of them are executed in the first few minutes of the trading day.

Full time traders that I know trade both the open and the close, and trade less in the middle of the day.

The first 1 hour is imporant...
the closing 1 hour is impt as well...

and try to move some catches here n there in the middle(but dont trade agressively)....

Remember... Trade for the trade.. NOT for the P&L...
Money would automatically come...
