There are six transformations in a material body -- birth, growth, production of offspring, maintenance, dwindling and death. So death is the final transformation when the body is no longer inhabitable by the spirit soul. The body is a bag of chemicals and it is the vehicle for the spirit soul, our eternal identity. The body itself is never alive to begin with since there is nothing in the body that can be said to be the life force. It is the spirit soul that is the life force in the body and when that life force leaves the body that is death.

Death
Cessation of life functions. This can involve the whole organism (somatic death), individual organs (organ death), individual cells (cellular death), and individual parts of cells (organelle death). Although the next smaller level of organization, the macromolecules which make up the cell organelles, may also cease to function, their disintegration is ordinarily not spoken of as death.
Death is the end of life. Dying is the process of approaching death, including the choices and actions involved in that process.

Death is the passing from this earthly life to the next. The actual act of dying or the spirit leaving the body is painless. The circumstances leading to death can be painful such as, cancer, gun shot, knife wound, disease ... etc. We all have eternal life after this earthly life. Where we end up is to be decided by God. We go to one of three places. For those who believe in God and have lived a holy life and are in a state of grace with God, they will by God's grace go to be with him in heaven. Those who do not live according God's commandments and are in a state of grace will go by God's grace to Purgatory to be cleaned up before going to heaven. No one past present or future has or will step foot in to heaven dirty and stained with all types of sins. Most people go to Purgatory. And finally those who do not believe, have no faith in God, have committed unspeakable acts and are in a state of mortal sin will go to hell for all eternity.
