You have to earn under so much a year. I was given legal aid for my divorce but they knew I was buying a house too and now they have said if I move house and sell up I have to pay the legal aid back to them

If you are arrested and taken to a police station, the attendance of a solicitor is free. At court you will ask for legal aid, and be means tested. I have seen very rich people get legal aid, it is hit and miss really.

I think you have to be in receipt of income support or some equlvalent benefit to qualify. But don't quote me on that - call a solicitor who deals with legal aid cases and quiz them. Some solicitors offer a 30 minute free consulation during which your case can be assessed as to its likely success - in which case they may take it on, due to the high chances of winning their costs back.

No, it's determined by poverty level and number of people in your home. But if you call Legal Aid, they can sometimes answer a general question about something.

Yes under so much a year, for ordinary people.
But people like the Maxwells, (remember them?) seem to be above the ordinary rules.

if you are talking about a public defender assigned by the court house then your income has to be below a certain standard...it's just like getting welfare.
