1) Gretzky - like one person mentioned, has more assists than anyone has points. Three other awesome records - 50 goals in 39 games, 51 game point streak, 163 assists in a season.

2) Gordie Howe - I love the 'Gordie Howe hat trick' - a goal, assist and a fight

3) Bobby Orr - revolutionized the game as an offensive defencemen.

1. Gretzky
2. Howe
4. Richard
3. Lemieux
5. Messier

There's no question about #1. There's a reason why Gretzky's called "The Great One". He's got more assists than anyone has points. Howe was considered the greatest before Gretzky came along and broke all his records. Richard was also the greatest of his time. Lemieux might be higher on my list if he hadn't had so many problems with his back and cancer. Messier is a leader that plays with his heart. He's second on the all-time points list.

Crosby and Ovechkin are going to make that list one day.

Gretzky without a doubt,
Orr wasn't there long enough although was the best of his time
Howe was great and gets second based on his longevity
Lemieux, if healthy would have been the greatest

Orr, Howe, Gretzky

It's tough to compare players in different positions though. Along that subject, a person could make a case that Tretiak was one of the best players of all time but unfortunately never made it in the NHL.

Re: some answers above - scoring the most points does not mean being the best player.
