I have a friend who is, it seems, quite level headed and down to earth, young family, career etc etc. Thing is, he wants a handgun to keep in the house, locked away, in case of nation-wide violence (this is in the UK, handguns illegal). He is a responsible guy, captain of the local rifle-shooting club, but is desperately trying to get his hands on a handgun for the reasons outlined above.

What should I/he do? Do I report him? What?

I was only joking before. I think guns are really stupid, and the only good reason to have them is because everybody else has one, a circular argument that goes nowhere fast.

Smart individual...do many in The UK remember when Hitler was ready to invade that isle... They had to ask the private citizens, The Free People, of the U.S. to donate their own personal fire arms so that they would have weapons for the people to use in personal defence against the invaders... My Grandfather gave several rifles and a couple hand guns for the cause... as did tens of thousands of Americans... what happened to those weapons...most were never given out... and most all were destroyed by the opresive British government after the "threat' was over.... it is good to hear that at least one Free Man is still alive in The UK

Staying out of it works for me...

However, if you notice, down the road, that this gun is a danger to family / children (unlocked, etc..) tell him right out, your feelings. Bring the fact up that its illegal and sure hope he doesn't get in trouble then leave it alone again !

He seems to have some sort of obsession about guns, try to talk some sense into him before he does something really stupid that he is going to regret big time.

Yah....what you don't know, won't hurt you. If he is afraid of civil unrest, he can have it locked away and not sitting on the coffee table for others to get hurt. Tell him to do what he wants, but don't tell you and you keep your yapper shut.
