you need to reconstruct your sentences to avoid needing this phrase. it is weak writing. and by the way, ie means "id est," latin for "that is," so it may or may not be appropriate to use that instead.

In the context of a college paper, I would go for....'to paraphrase...'...........or.......'similarly'.
If you mean a newspaper, then sadly...the lowest common denominator will do................in other words...........who cares when they are reading a newspaper.??????
