Why would someone that hawks war, get 6 deferments to get out of Vietnam?

Maybe because he's a coward that wanted someone else to take his place.

I agree he is a coward. Its much easier to speak war if your not the one going to fight in the war.

The system of deferments was, in my opinion, designed to keep as many people in the middle and upper classes out of the military as possible, in large part (again, opinion) because these are the people most likely to vote and to be taken seriously if they were to make waves. People at the lower edge of society are assumed to have nothing better to do, and besides it is three square meals a day.

We should not be hard on one person who took advantage of a system that was flawed. There were a lot of people who went to college just to stay out of Vietnam, and this also might have something to do with why the divorce rate has been so high since then.

He said he "never served" because of deferments to finish a college career that lasted six years rather than four, which he attributed to subpar academic performance and the fact that he had to work to pay for his education.

He added that he "would have obviously been happy to serve had I been called."

Away from the hearing room, he told the Washington Post that he had sought his deferments because "I had other priorities in the 60's than military service."

"I don't regret the decisions I made," he added. "I complied fully with all the requirements of the statutes, registered with the draft when I turned 18. Had I been drafted, I would have been happy to serve."

personal cowardice and a willingness to send others to their deaths is a hallmark of the current US administration. Bush avoided war service (out drink-driving and coked-up, no doubt) and fled like a yellow-bellied chicken on sept 11th.

Kerry did his duty and even Rachel Corrie (who went into a war zone unarmed and stood in front of a bulldozer) was braver than anyone in the top echelons of the govt. shame on the neocons and the ignorant who support them and think they are making the US a better place.

He got six deferments because of the way the draft was run.

He was married before the war and well before the draft was started.

Initially, the draft would not take him because he was married. Then when the draft changed such that they would take married men, they then would not take him because he was married with a child.

Those were entirely the selective service's decision and how it was run.

When a chickenhawk wraps himself in the American flag, he is crossdressing. Like the Kokomo Commando, Danny Quayle, these unpatriotic sissies have been getting away with their treason

Dick Cheney didn;t want to fight a WAR ever. All he wanted was to make money of it.

Why did the government grant those deferments? Especially since he's not as connected as your boy Al Gore was.

Al Gore Combat Correspondent:

" Combat Correspondent? You ever seen any combat Al? "

" I seen a little.....on TV."

He decided that by getting married and having a baby quickly, he could get out of it. Maybe it was cowardice?
