It's better never to give out your Social Security number unless you have to.
What kind of applications are you filling out?
If it's a bank account, loan or credit card application, they have a right to know your SS#. It helps them to check your credit. If you're not comfortable giving out this information over the Internet, you should fill out and mail the applications or fill them out in person at the lending institution or retailer.

if you're filling out legitimate job applications, and your SS is required, you should be safe. there's far too much liability involved for the company to not take every single precaution possible to prevent identity theft. also, you could try filling in zeroes and then saying you don't have a social security number, but beware-- this could make things tricky when you start receiving paychecks.

if the site is legit they will list a phone# and address where they are, also chech with the BBB first if the info checks out it is real.if a hacker really wants your social they can get it pretty easily but no company will really need it at the beginning of your transaction anyway, fill out the apps and leave the ss blank. check out the company and then give it if YOU think they need it.of course if you are contacting someone like the credit sites to get your credit scores or something of that nature your safe..just dont give it to someone who calls you.

Is it a legitimate site? Do they have a legitimate reason for wanting to know your SS number? Is the site secure?

as long as you dont submit it you should be okay. unless you have a keylogger on your computer, but a virus scan should determine if you have one or not. i have filled out lots of online applications and they did not ask me for my social security number. i would be more careful if i were you.
