Because DOS (and windows) uses "con" as a device name, it's short for "console".

If you type in from a command line:

copy con test.txt

You can then type freely. When you hit ctrl-z the file will close, and you'll have a file called "test.txt" consisting of what you typed.... you copied it from the console to your file.

ha... sturdy Q.... this turned right into a trick we used to ask in college time, right here you flow .. it really isn't any longer that extraordinary. 'con' is a reserved note from the former DOS days, only which skill 'console'. in case you had to create a clean textual content report in DOS you should variety 'reproduction con newfile.txt' which skill reproduction from the console to newfile.txt. this help you to variety some lines and once you ended the report with ^Z (DOSish for 'end of report') you'll have a report said as newfile.txt containing inspite of you wrote contained in the console. it truly is unquestionably nevertheless conceivable contained in the abode windows XP console, and would you spot what mess it would reason in case you enable records or folders have the call 'con'? What would 'reproduction con newfile.txt' then mean? BSOD? Giving this list of alternative DOS units that ought to't be used as folder names: CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9. wish you get it.

There are certain words that have predefined meanings called Reserved Words. This of course is why you can't make folders with that name.

Some of the more common are:
CON - The display monitor
PRN - Default value is LPT1
LPT1-LPT3
AUX - Serial port 1 (COM1)
COM1-COM4
NUL

Also, don't use these words for User Logons either.

You cannot create a folder with the same name as any of the following devices:
CON, PRN, LPT1, LPT2 ..LPT9, COM1, COM2 ..COM9
This limitation ensures that redirection to these devices will always work.
