Advantages Of Laboratory Experiments

A field experiment is an experiment carried out in the participants' natural/everyday environment. However, the researcher is still manipulating the IV (changing the thing that affects the DV). Therefore, the main advantages are: 1. Mundane realism-i.e. can apply the results to everyday life (everyday environment). 2. Less prone to demand characteristics (i.e. the participant is more likely to behave normally instead of either pleasing the researcher or going against the researcher). the main disadvantages are: 1. Less control over extraneous variables (i.e. other things that could affect the results other than the IV). 2. Less replicable than Lab experiments (i.e. harder to repat because every set of participants' everyday environment will be slightly different). For further advantages and disadvantages, consult one of the following books: Cardwell, Clark & Meldrum-Psychology for AS Level Cardwell-AS Psychology: the Complete Companion Eysenck, M-AS Psychology (3rd edition)

The advantages are: psych experiments control for variables, or those things that change all the time in the real world. With this under control, we can then use our results to generalize and perhaps form a theory as to what the results mean (in life). We can also manipulate the variables and the population we study and then translate these results to form more conclusions.
The disadvantages are that the real world is not a laboratory and variables change all the time. Also, we might make mistakes in our interpretations of the data and get the cause and effect wrong. For example, we can see that 95% of cancer deaths consisted of people who used toilet paper. We can make the mistake of concluding from that data that toilet paper causes cancer.

Advantages -
can be replicated, can be controlled, variables can be altered to see effects!

Disadvantages -
don't take into account peoples thoughts, feelings etc. Some people try to guess purpose of experiment and alter their responses accordingly. Some variables are uncontrollable - such as peoples mood, health etc.

Advantage: You can control the conditions better which makes the experiment more rigorous and reliable.

Disadvantage: You are not observing people in their natural settings, and so the experiment is not authentic. E.g. Big Brother - people typically behave differently when they know they are being watched.

Advantages: You have high control
Study can be replicated
Its possible to establish cause and effect

Disadvantages: Artificial bcos they aren't real life and can lack ecological validity
Deamnd charactersitics by participants which can bias the results

It allows you to observe more natural behaviour, but you'll have a lot more variables to consider.

advantages: easy to replicate, high quality data
disadvantages: low ecological validity

the experiments may also be biased in many ways, eg by gender, race, region, class etc etc

It allows you to precisely control and manipulate your variables, but you may not be observing naturalistic behaviours.
