I'd recommend seeing a doctor, especially one that specializes in sleep medicine. Could be something serious going on.
I've had the best results with Unisom.
A word of advice - read the labels for the active ingredients. Tylenol PM is simply Tylenol with generic benadryl (diphenhydramine) added. You can get generic benadryl MUCH cheaper, and then you don't have to take tylenol you don't need. The ingredient in Unisom is also an allergy medicine, but it's not benadryl.

Whenever I take regular Benadryl, I'm completely conked out for hours. I'm a bit of an insomniac and I wake up constantly, but Benadryl always works for me. Also, I find that the 8 hour Tylenol works well too - it's not a nighttime formula, but I think it just relaxes me a bit, gets rid of the little aches and pains that keep me up. A few drops of lavender oil on my pillow helps too.

I know you said besides but Tylenol PM is very very good. NyQuil is too strong you'll still feel tired in the morning. Just try your average otc sleeping pills.

Simply Sleep pills are good, and you don't feel like crap in the morning. I can't take Tylenol PM, I'm groggy for hours the next day

When I have trouble sleeping I take a little Nyquil. but that isnt a long term thing to use. But it will definatly knock him out.
If it is long term I would talk to the doctor about it.
