Soccer is the most popular game in the world. The English invented it and imperialism exported it. All of the continents of the world embrace the sport. The only broad demographic groups that do not go crazy over soccer are those where soccer is pre-empted by something else. The "something else" is always something far less popular than soccer.
So, are you basically asking why is the whole world nothing but a bunch of boneheads?
What amazes me is why Americans go bonkers over American Football (bizarre name for a game that is played with the hands). Total playing time of American football, from snap till play is dead is about 5 - 6 seconds per play. Add up all the plays and the game is about 5 or 6 minutes long. Most of the "game" is watching men in a huddle or walking back to a huddle. The boring time on TV is filled with endless replays and mindless commentator jabber about meaningless statistics.
Why do intelligent Americans go crazy over a sham of a game that is filled with more fluff than substance?

I have to agree. While - unlike many others - I respect soccer/football fans for loving the game, I do not comprehend the source of their passion. I understand it is a very high skill level sport, requiring fast reflexes, finesse, and dexterity. I love to play the game - but UGGHH, it is so painful for me to watch. I mean compare it to Basketball - containing all the aspects above, but with the added benefit of balls frequently sliding through nets! (Similarly tennis with frequent scoring). Or let's take Rugby with all its grit and heart - as much a combative struggle as a game, with none of those wimpy pauses you find in American Football. Oh, and while I'm on the subject of wimps, my main gripe about soccer has got to be that it is populated by a herd of girly-men who spend almost as much time rolling around on the ground playing up for the penalty (crying, if I may use the word), as they do handling the ball. Is that what fans call sporting conduct? Is that why they're watching?
Obviously, I am in need of some enlightenment. The argument repeatedly made, in this string and elsewhere, is that soccer is by far the world's most popular sport - which I do not contest. But this is no argument, merely fact.
Not one reply in this string has yet even attempted to explain WHY. What - about the game, or those who play it (while they are playing it, not the antics some get up to off the field) - justifies the passion, the interest?
Please someONE... anyONE address this point!! If you can. Surely among all these billions of fans... ONE would be able to construct such a discussion.
