A surprise that leaves you in confusion or dismay. Synonymous with bewilderment.
Do you have older relatives your 4 year old hangs out with?
I was like your kid, always using huge words for my age, but it was because I hung out with my grandparents, aunts and uncles and 'eavesdropped' rather than running and playing with my cousins most of the time.

Part 1:
Consternation: Confusion caused by fear OR extreme sadness, when things get too tough to handle and you can't do anything but cry....
Part 2:
My kids baffle me every day. One time, my baby asked me why God made people different. They have asked about why some people look different, why some kids are mean, why there aren't dinosaurs anymore, What is Heaven like....etc., etc.
Sometimes, there is just no good, simple answer, and the real answer is not something they are prepared to understand.

Well since everybody has told you what a consternation is, I'm going to suggest that maybe your four year old meant CONSTELLATION, as in stars, etc... Seems more likely he/she would hear that word, before the other one.
The question I have gotten from a kid that I had no idea how to answer was...
"what happens to the baby chick when you boil the egg?"

Consternation is a fear resulting from the awareness of danger.
When I was about three years old, I baffled my parents with this one:
Everytime I saw a Volkswagen Beetle, I said the word "news."
They would correct me and say that it was a VW Beetle, but I just kept saying "news."
The only thing they could surmise was that I saw one on the news once.
