Hi, I have a really old car that I was only planning on keeping for a couple more months. I think the car needs new shocks. Is this something I can get away without fixing? Or will the car break down if I don’t get it fixed?

you don't HAVE to replace the shocks on your car. They just smooth out the ride....Make sure it is only the shocks that are bad and not something more serious though....

The ONLY reason to replace shocks is if you're not satisfied with the car's ride.

Bad shocks do NOT wear tires unevenly. They do not cause other things to go wrong and will not cause your car to break down.

I have a '55 Volkswagen with the original factory shocks. And they still work fine. The Germans developed seals that never get hard and crack, so I lucked out. I don't think you can get quality shocks anymore, now they're designed so you have to replace them from time to time.

IF...it does need shocks...the car probably won't break down. BUT.....it will get to be difficult to control on bumpy streets and roads, and should you need to swerve or stop very quickly to avoid an accident.....You won't be able to control the car enough to avoid the accident. Shocks are fairly inexpensive....you don't need to buy the most expensive ones out there. I would replace them.

only if you hit a large bump or curb or something

this is how you tell if its the shocks

park the car.
put your foot on the bumper and push down hard. with all your weight.
if the car bounces up and down a few times, the shocks are gone.
if it just comes back up and settles back to normal. then they are ok.

if they're gone out, then replace them.

check both front and back, the back can be ok and the front gone out.
then you only have to buy 2 to save some money..

hope this helps

If the bumpy ride doesn't bother you, do not worry about shocks. When the steering wheel falls down into your lap and no longer directs the way you go is it too late to do the steering system.

If your not going to keep the car. It won't hurt
to drive it. But if you were to keep it. It would be
wise to change them. Due too tire wear poor
handling performance. It will also effect your
braking ability.

I would replace them, however, you can get by without doing the repairs just be aware that the floating can cause other problems depending on how you drive.

Good Luck,
