About 45 million people in the US claim to have some sort of Irish descent. Meanwhile in Ireland, there are only 6 million people living there.

Ireland experienced very heavy emigration from the country throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, with many emigrants going to the USA. There are also very many people of Irish descent in the UK and Australia, among other places.

Saying you have Irish descent of course does not mean you have Irish nationality. All it means is that you have a grandparent or great-grandparent etc who was Irish. It's often mixed in with other nationalities too.

Yes, it is true but we must classify the "claiming" as a legal
claim of nationality or if it is only the "pride" of descending
of Irish blood. The same holds true of the Scots. They
possibly have more "Scottish Clubs" in the USA than in
Scotland. In my travelling days, at formal dinners there were
always those proud Scots wearing a Kilt and speaking with
a Southern Accent. The last one I met was a Texas "Duncan"
