Nucleic acid within a protein coat. Optional ingredients include a membrane. The nucleic acid can be single or double stranded DNA or RNA, circular or linear.

Viruses don't metabolize, and so they're not "alive" and can't be considered cells.

Also, they require machinery of a host cell in order to replicate their genetic info.
