Setting up a LAN involves connecting two or more computers together so they can talk to each other. The most common way to do this is with a box called a 'hub' in the middle, sort of like the spokes on a bicycle wheel. The computers can be connected with cable (usually ethernet) or via wireless ethernet, or a combination of the two, depending on what hardware you have available.

Anyway, what can you get out of a bunch of computers connected together? The answer is: many things!

1) You could transfer data from one computer to another. I do this when I want to copy music from a desktop to a laptop, or when I want to back up files, or send a document to my housemate to read.

2) You could share an internet connection. I have many computers running off a single internet connection at home. My hub is also a router and contains an ADSL modem. The modem connects to the internet, and the router allows the computers connected via the hub to share a single connection.

3) There are many other possibilities. I use my LAN to control one computer remotely from another, using VNC software, which means I don't have to leave my living room to control the computer in my bedroom. When I'm at my parents' house, I can videoconference with them. You could play games against each other, such as Quake III.

However, once you're all connected to the internet then you might as well use the internet for many of those tasks. The internet is basically a big network which offers the same advantages as a LAN. However, because the computers in a LAN are so close together geographically, activities which take a long time on the internet are usually a lot quicker when they take place over a LAN. That's why I mention tasks such as gaming, videoconferencing or transferring large files - they're all pretty slow over the internet (although they're getting much faster) compared to the same activity using a LAN.
