If you answer my question, please provide me with your own interpretation, not one of the critics, I've already read most of the reviews.

I haven't read the reviews so .... Clive Owen hid inside the bank for a week after stealing the diamonds of his distant relatives. Those relatives had been killed by the Nazis because the bank president had told the Nazis where they were, and he stole the diamond ring and the bag of diamonds and their money way back in the day; thus, he had enough money to start a bank in the US.

The diamonds that were stolen were in a safety deposit box that was not on any records because they contained stolen, undocumented contents. Jodie Foster was hired to keep that under wraps, but Denzel recorded her, thus blackmailing her into doing to things for him: getting him a paygrade raise and getting the check writing charges that he was being investigated for off his back. At the end, he told them to check into war crimes, so the bank president would be punished for his crimes, and Jodie Foster would be helping the mayor get ahead politcally with such a scandal (she plays all sides of the fence.)

All the people who were in on the crime with Clive Owen were mixed in with the hostages during the course of the heist. This is why they had all the hostages in different rooms and kept switching people around. They even "beat up" that guy who was actually part of the crime.

Denzel didn't have money for a diamond and discussed that with Clive, so as a favor, Clive slipped a diamond in his pocket when they bumped into each other.

In the end, it shows that Jodie is very corrupt, but Denzel is also in some ways corrupt, but Clive got away with it. No one can identify him, the plan was flawless, and the bank president is going down for his war crimes.

I think Clive Owens' character wanted to expose the bank president's shady past. That's why toy guns were used, no one was actually killed, and no money was stolen. The diamonds were just a little bonus. I have to admit. It was confusing for me too. It's one of those movies where you talk about it alot afterwards to try to piece it together, and everybody will have their own version of what they think happened.

Whats so hard...........he hid out inside the bank, cause he knew they were going to search and drill everyone that came out of there. When the heat let up, he just simply strolled out of the bank with the diamonds from the safe deposit box. Since they were stolen diamonds from Nazi times, they were not reported as stolen.........the perfect crime, stealing something that should not exist or cannot be reported as existing.
