There's definitely some good answers here! Might as well add my 2 cents' worth...lol
Happiness, to me, is giving to others and respecting the karma (a/k/a your God, the laws of nature, Life Force, etc., etc.) around you and others. You get what you give in life. Be kind. Be charitable. Be empathetic. It will come back to you two-fold. It's choosing to find a solution to challenges that come your way. Conquering those, whether through your own doing or the help of others, is the icing on the cake.
I know some will think this is B.S., but I have happiness in my life and I live my life according to the above.
Remember too: happiness is a subjective state of being. What makes me happy might not make you happy.

The secret of happiness? Gratitude. If you can look around yourself and be thankful for the things you have, the place you're in, the people you are with...you'll find that you are happy.

Understanding that life is what YOU make of it. If you make choices that cause unhappiness for you or those around you, you will be unhappy. Happiness comes from within. ONLY YOU can make yourself happy.

Just like all the religious people who will answer your question saying god or jesus or allah makes them happy when the fact is they are hopelessly lost in a sea of their own ignorance.

I think it helps a lot to be just a little bit selfish. I am not selfish & it makes me feel miserable to say 'no' for instance. Trying to please oneself & not relying on other people to fulfil that task might make you happier.
