Please explain it step by step

A rectangular storage container with an open top and a square
base has a volume of 8 cubic meters. Material for the base costs $5
per square meter and material for the sides costs $2 per square
meter. Find a formula that expresses the cost of materials as a
function of the length of a side of a base.

L = Base Length, H = Container Height, Volume = V
Base Area = L^2
Side Area = L*H
Number of Base Sides = 1
Number of Sides = 4
V =(L^2)*H = 8, H=8/L^2
Cost = 5*L^2+4*2*L*H
Cost = 5*L^2+8*L*(8/L^2)
Cost = 5*L^2+64/L

volume = legnth x width x height

so 8 cu.mt. = LWH

the base is length x width, so cost for base is 5LW

the sides are width x height (2 sides) and length x height (the other 2 sides), so cost for sides is 2*2WH and 2*2LH or (4WH + 4LH)

so total cost is 5LW + 4WH + 4LH

hope this is enough to get you started. Can't do ALL your work for you, as you wouldn't really learn that way and wouldn't do well on your tests! :)

Good luck

a = side of base
b = height=8/a^2
area of the 4 sides is 32/a
area of base = a^2
so cost =( a^2)*5 + (32/a)*2
