Hawley / Smoot bill signed by Hoover in 1930 raised tariffs but did nothing to alleviate the great depression which was originally called a recession. A lot of things started in the thirty's designed to end the depression, Roosevelt, neo-Kensian (sp?)..... anything sound familiar?

The New Deal, it's effectiveness can be debated, though. I think some positves thing did come out of it, plus it gave people the feeling that the federal government was doing something to help people. FDR was elected 4 times, so people back in the 30's much have thought positively of him and his programs. Although, I'm sure WW 2, helped him.

Nothing. FDR kept us in depression for 8 years (1933-1941). Only the war economy pulled us out of it. FDR also ignored our allies in Europe while they were conquered by Nazis (1939-1941). If he was a Republican instead of a Democrat, history would record him as the worst president of all time.
