Does the name Colleen have any significant meaning in Ireland? My name is Colleen and I was told my whole life that it was such a popular name in Ireland and that it refers to an Irish girl. Is this true. Please don't be mad at me for asking this question in the UK and Ireland category, I would have asked in the US one but a bunch of stupid americans would have answered and gave sarcastic remarks) Oh and by the way, I'm American but my mom was 50% Irish and a little Welsh and just a tad of Scottish and English. Not that this is relevent but I just wanted to mention it!

yup it means girl in irish, i have an irish terrier puppy and her pedigree name is saradon (kennel name) colleen because she is an irish terrier and she was the only girl in the litter as well as the first girl the breeder had ever bred! at home we call her keira but not because we don't like the name colleen - we didn't have her proper details until a few months after bringing her home so we decided on another irish name which means dark in irish coz she was born black and is now ginger! colleen is a popular name in ireland and i love it too! lucky you having such a nice name xx

The name Colleen is the anglicised way of spelling 'Cailín' which mean 'girl' in the Irish language. The way your name is spelt is how the word is pronounced in the Irish language. Lots of girls have this name in Ireland and spell it the same way as you do.

The word "Cailin" with an accent (called a fada) over the i is the Irish word for girl or little girl. There is no Irish word "Colleen" - its the Anglicization of cailin.

It is an anglicisation version of the word 'cailín' which means girl.
You don't get many people in Ireland called it. It's almost a dead giveaway that the person isn't Irish.
