The main reason has to do with how WWI ended. President Wilson wanted to pledge funds from the winners to rebuild Germany -- but the European Allies wanted to punish Germany -- making them pay war reparations. This led to a terrible depression in Germany and to hyperinflation. This made it easier for people like Hitler to make the German people believe that they had to stand up agains the world and take back what they felt wsa theirs.

Germany wasn't the only place where this was hapening. Italy and Spain were also taken over by despots claiming to return their countries to the stature they felt they deserved using Nationalism as the tool.

Even in the US, conservatives felt that Protectionism and National Pride were the best way to run the country.
