Oh man, I have a TON of favorites. I'm 23 and I grew up listening to all this stuff and any music from 1961-1974-ish is my favorite.
Here are some good bands/artists to check out:
Beatles, Stones, Elvis, Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Temptations, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles (in the absence of time and space, let's just say all Motown is a good thing), Dave Clark Five, CCR, Herman's Hermits, Jefferson Airplane, The Guess Who, Grass Roots, Buckinghams, the Kinks, Johnny Rivers, the Hollies, the Archies (even though they only had the one song), Tommy James & the Shondells, the Turtles, Three Dog Night, the Fleetwoods (not Fleetwood Mac, but they're excellent too!), most of the girl groups: the Angels, Dixie Cups, the Ronettes, the Crystals, (basically anything created/produced by Phil Spector is good), Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Mary Wells...
I could go on and on, but that should get you started

For the fifties try listening to Little Richard, Bo Diddly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino and Churk Berry. For the sixties I'd have to go for the obvious choices like The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, The Animals and also most of your Motown music would be a good start.
