Two possible meanings:
1) The store is out of stock on the album you wanted - it's "sold out".
2) The artist has "sold out" in making the album, meaning that he or she has compromised artistic merits and principals that he or she exhibited previously, for the primary purpose of achieving commercial success.
I have a feeling you mean the second one. For an example, see Nelly Furtado.

Either there are none left in the store or the artist has forgotten about promulgating his political or social agenda in order to sell records.

When you no longer write music intended to convey anything more than dollar signs. You write something catchy that will sell to the masses, you allow your image to become a trend, you do it all for the money.
