What gets lost in this is the question. He asked for all purpose backs. Running, receiving, blocking, returning kicks, etc. Barry was a great runner. Allen, great runner as well. But you have to put everything together on this one.
1. Walter Payton
2. Thurman Thomas
3. Roger Craig
4. Marshall Faulk
5. Gale Sayers

Sayers is five because he wasn't able to play over an extended paeriod of time, through no fault of his own. Payton was the most complete back ever. Thomas was the motor behind the Bills offense during their dominance of the AFC. Craig revolutionized the position after Payton led the way. And Faulk took something from all of those guys and became today's standard. LT is good, but he's got some work to do to catch those guys. And we haven't even mentioned the likes of Dave Meggett, Ricky Watters, or even Priest Holmes for that matter.

Why did you not include Emmitt Smith ?

1. Emmitt Smith...the all-time leading rusher.
2. Walter Peyton..."Sweetness"
3. Jim Brown...he set the standard. No question 'bout that.
4. Barry Sanders...his quitting football allowed Emmitt Smith to become the all-time leading rusher period.
5. Thurman Thomas...very good runner, but played for the losers known as the Buffalo Bills. You are remembered by how many Super Bowls are won...not lost.

I can't believe you don't have Walter Payton on the list. He should be No.1. He ran hard, could catch the ball, and loved to pass block. He was and always will be the best. The question should be "Who are the five best all-purpose running backs of all-time behind Walter Payton?"

First of all LaDainian Tomlinson needs to be higher... the guy is a stud. Also, WHERE IS BARY SANDERS!!!???!?! He was the only offensive weapon on the Detroit Lions, and he still put up Hall Of Fame numbers.
