Columbus actually did "discover" America for Europe and the rest of what came to be called "The Old World." The Vikings were here earler, but their visits remained unknown to everybody else and led to nothing. But when Columbus returned with tales and gifts from America, the news of "The New World" spread like wildfire. It opened up the Age of Exploration and was a turning point in world history. That's why Columbus Day was made a holiday.

It's tragic what eventually happened to the Indians (who had immigrated here from Northern Asia across the Berring Strait when it was iced over). However, human nature to a very large extent, is what it is and has always been so. There were good, bad, indifferent, and misguided people back then just as there are now. We can't let that hinder us from seeing the bigger picture in its historical content.

What Columbus did in 1492 changed the world forever. And isn't recognizing pivotal persons or events like this is what most holidays are all about?

In the Navajo Nation, which is a reservation located in the southwestern U.S., we don't observe Columbus Day. Its just like any other day, business as usual.

Its not silly its the event that helped settle this Continent and paved the way for this society. Its only people that hate this country that try to find things that are wrong with it instead of looking at the good that came out of what he did.

You are absolutely right. Christopher Columbus was not a nice man. Not one we should be celebrating about or naming a day after.

Thanks for the question,

I think it's a waste of a day off. Sure it's nice to not do anything, but it's still bullsh*t and wrong.
