Actually, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, caffeine is NOT responsible for elevating blood pressure at all.
This was tested in a triple blind study at several universities, and in NO instance did they find a rise in blood pressure from pure caffiene. Now coffee, is a different matter, it does raise blood pressure...but then there are no less than 307 unidentified compounds in coffee alone, one of them has to be the culprit, but it isn't caffiene.

increased blood pressure means increased vascular resistance/friction. its negated though because caffeine also increases force and rate of contraction of the heart
