Every year, Blackpool's famous Illuminations are switched on by a famous personality: in past years Wilfred Pickles, Stanley Matthews, George Formby, Gracie Fields, Ken Dodd, Tony Blackburn, Tom Baker, Les Dawson, Frank Bruno and even 3-time National winner Red Rum have been called upon to pull the famous switch. However, since BBC Radio Two got involved in 1997, a number of "non-entities" have been lined up, leaving us with the strange choice this year of...
DALE WINTON!
Why? They invited Peter Kay along as well: surely he would have been a far better choice.
Then again, Chris Evans did it last year, so they couldn't sink much lower.

Peter Kay is far too good for Blackpool. Agree with Dale Winton choice, he represents exactly what Blackpool is all about these days. ' Tacky, cheap looking but costs a fortune, no style, no taste, the only people who go there anymore are sad old queens! Mmmm now why Dale?

When Dale Winton presents his shows, he's smart, entertaining and intelligent.
He doesn't go round effing and blinding all the time just to make himself look 'big' and I've never heard him say a bad word about anybody else. Coming from a show-biz family he knows his job, and does it well without going over the top. The only thing that's surprised me is the over-the-top reaction he's caused here! As for being "a non-entity", I don't quite think so !!!

I can think of far worse choices than Dale Winton, a name that everybody in the country knows, who is always polite and enthusiastic on screen.
As for Chris Evans, TFI Friday was one of the finest entertainment shows we have ever had- it defined the Britpop era.
Sorry- who are you again?

Well must say I am truly astonished Dale Winton!!! Think there is only one reason for choosing him - look at his perma tan skin
- its obvious that its to kid people into going to Blackpool for that
healthy 'GLOW' - now if it were up to me it would most def be the
porridge coloured face of the ever cuddly Peter Kay a true lad of the North- (yup and I am a southerner - Londoner to be precise
- Peter is a LEGEND in our family!) - but seem to recall Dale
saying something about his Mother performing at Blackpool eons
ago - maybe he was chosen for that reason - my concern will bne he will try to out twinkle the illuminations!

I think it's because Blackpool is quite unfashionable. It certainly could do with a bit of a face lift and scrub. I like visiting there but I'm not suprized they can't lure big name stars there anymore. Afterall, it's not like the end of pier shows attract stars anymore. It's a shame.

Blackpool is the dirtiest, seediest, most disgusting place in the world. It is "the seaside town that they forgot to close down". Dale Winton would probably fit in well.
I should know....I live in Preston!

What the hell does it matter who flips the switch? If a gee-gee can do it, so can Dale, who incidentally is a lot more popular than you seem to think, even amongst us heteros. Anyhow, it's supposed to be a gay occasion, right?
