No degree is needed. Try to become an assistant for a jr. high school team. Get to know the coach and volunteer. If you prove yourself you could then get a position on a high school team. Don't rush it though. Learn as much as you can. Go to clinics even if they're for players. You can meet coaches there and discuss they're jobs and maybe gain some insight on who to contact for a position. Good luck.

In the U.S., to coach children, many rinks or recreation districts require attendance at a series of seminars offered by USA Hockey. Even if you know how to play hockey, you'll get very useful information in how to set up practices and drills and how to teach children the skills they need. You need to check with the rink or athletic association where you want to coach to find out what they require.

Pick a Major in college that is related to exercise science or sports recreation or anything along those lines. You don't necessarily need a degree but it may make you more creditable. Otherwise, you can start coaching local hockey leagues and progress from there. Dreams are for living.

Do you mean a Professional Coach?
You do not need a degree but you do need experience. start with the little leagues, then get into middle school, high school advance to college leagues and take it from there.
You need to be able to Manage people so if you decide to get a degree which wouldn't hurt go for management degree.
