it varies from place to place. I had to send in an application with references, take a test, get insurance and a bond, before I paid the fee to the building department. call your local building department to find the details. and you will probably have to take continuing education classes every year. its a couple of hours and then you can renew your license. it sounds like a lot of stuff, but it is really pretty easy. you may want to look at a general contractor's license, if you are thinking about about other flooring like wood. Plus you can take on other projects, if you want.

Very easy...go to the County Courthouse. The fee, depending on state, could be anywhere from $15 to $150
