Sometimes it is economics, or the haves and the have nots. Look at Germany after WWI. The reason the Nazi party was able to come to power is because the nation had been pummeled economically at the end of the war by the victors. The Nazis promised the German people a better quality of life and a return to Germany's status on the world stage. They were deluded and, thankfully, WWII didn't turn out like they planned, but I guess everyone has to have a dream to aspire to.
The number one reason throughout the history of humans for fighting other humans has been, and possibly always will be, religion. Sad, but very true.

Being attacked first (U.S. vs. Japan).
Religious differences (any Muslim nation vs. Muslim nation of different sect).
Desire to acquire another nation's territory (Iraq vs. Kuwait, Germany vs. much of Western Europe).
Those on the far-left will add another category, "Blood for oil". However, there have been no instances of the U.S. actually gaining oil by invading another nation. It still has a nice ring to it, though.
