I am a Brit - I travel usually 2 to 5 countries every month on oil business and I listen to what is being said and I'm fed up with us (being UK) just following Bush as I am constantly asked why this? & why that?

Most of the answers so far seem to be encouraging but some of you guys are simply brain washed.

What is democracy right now and who wants it Bush style?

Because Iran is not going around the world forcing democracy on everyone or its way on anything. Iran isn't going to other countries and "stealing their oil". Iran is standing up to the U.S.. Many countries would like to stand up against the U.S. but can't, because the U.S. is too powerful. I think everyone in the world is sick and tired of the U.S. meddling in the world's affairs, mostly by itself. It's easier for all the underdogs to unite together to fight the big bully. Being from another country, that is how the world really views the U.S., and has for quite some time, long before either of the Bushes entered the picture.

We're not the most hated (unless you count fanatical islam) just the most visible. There will always be hard core creatures that hate the U.S. but, they are a minority. Why you see so much hate? The haters get better press than they deserve because we tune in to it.

Maybe this hate by fanatical islam will grow to be historical, only time will tell. America hasn't come close to raising it's patriotic head in decades, when it does those that threaten us will crawl back in their hole. If you feel good about life and not experiencing the hate directly, I say forget about it. Life goes on.

As for Iran, If the Immams or Muhlahs Iatolahs (sp?) don't rein in their appointed president Amadinejad (sp?) I suspect we'll see some changes in the next year... The same as Venezuela. Both countries have common sense citizens that simply do not have a voice at this time.

Because people fail to study history.

Because people fail to lend emotions to fact, and prefer to lend emotions to fiction.

Because the US is not afraid to engage in unpopular campaigns and call out phony democracies and terrorist states.

Because the US really doesn't care what other nations/people think about their policies when it comes to self-defense (nor should they).

Because the US makes the world slightly unpleasant and dangerous by fighting necessary battles to inflict irreversible damage on terrorist and extremist elements that seek to slowly takeover the world's natural resources.

Because the US is a successful democracy and economy, and most other nations pale in comparison on these two fronts.

Because the media needs a foil to the hegemony of the US, and Iran and Venezuela are happy to play the role.

Because people's attention span and knowledge of geo-political and socio-economic matters on the global scale are measured in nanometers.

And finally, because much of the world's population really doesn't care about anything past the immediate 10 yards in front of them, and this gives ample opportunity for anti-human elements (Islamic terrorists and their sponsors) to frame news and politics to their view. If human beings cared one iota about what the world would be like with a nuclear Iran or a terrorist led Palestine or Lebanon or Iraq, they'd back the US 110%. But people don't care, about much, other than themselves, for the most part, which is understandable, but tragic.

Because Americans themselves are dividing us and flaunting all our faults for all the world to see. Because we do not stand together they disrespect us and this breeds hatred and gives them the idea that we are on the edge of disaster. All they need to do is spout what our own citizens are saying and they have all the ammunition they need.

Our own people make us look like a very weak people and we sure show them how abuses of our freedoms can destroy a nation from within.

People always hate the strongest. Back when there were 2 powers - U.S. and Soviet Union, the world was divided onto people who hated one or another. Right now there is only one major power in the world - U.S. and because of that U.S. starts to behave like a bully sometimes - people in other countries don't like that. Besides, we lack consistency in our policies. We bombed the Yugoslavian Christians to save Muslims in the late 90s, now we bomb Muslims to save Christians in other countries. No clear message - just constant show of force.

The answer is simple....people around the world think that Americans are full of themselves and think they are better than others. But even as this is untrue we are judged anyway. Plus countries are known to take new sides every war.

Put ignorant powerful people and ignorant powerless people together sharing the same world, and the ignorant powerful will bully the powerless, and the ignorant powerless will think that ANYTHING tha even faintly smells of the Powerful is EVIL.

That is the formula for disaster.
