Your question assumes there is ONE "secret" to motivation, whereas motivation is a complicated matter.
Have we learned something about it?
Well, there have always been people who understood a lot about motivating people, and yes, over time, humanity as a whole has learned a lot more about what motivates us.
Turns out, one of the strongest motivators is the fear of being humiliated. Of course, we are all motivated by many things.

the secret of motivation was found in the earliest of days...it is survival...you can survive in several different realms...finances, health, spirit, mental, etc....in any way a human exists, a human also survives...we are then motivated by this natural and innate instinct to survive and perhaps excel....
