I would like to visit a friend of mine, in Katy (outside of Houston), Texas. Later, I will be driving to a work assignment in Dallas, Texas, probably the next day. I was wondering what route I should take (fastest, safest) in order to do this?

To add further details, I am going to Westlake, which I believe is about 20 minutes from Dallas. I'll be heading to Texas next week, so I am looking for relatively up-to-date information based on people who have driven similar routes.

from Dallas to Houston est. 4- 4 1/2 hrs.
try looking up mapquest..I use them for all my map,,to & fro,,directions.
they also have options to include stops along the way..directions with or without the freeways ,,and shows whats near by the location you are looking for..I think their maps are clear too.
and they also show the estimated time it will take you to get there.

Have a safe trip ! = )

I don't know how fast some of these people answering are driving, but it ALWAYS takes me at least 4.5 hours and usually closer to 5 to get from Houston area to Dallas area. Especially if you encounter traffic/road work, which always seem to be my case. Katy is west of Houston, so to get to 45 is around 20 minutes with NO traffic, you could take Loop 8 north to cut some time, but it costs some cash for tolls. Also, where in Dallas are you heading, that makes a huge difference. If you are going to north Dallas, it takes way more time than just getting to downtown. Hope this helps.

I live in Dallas ands have gone to visit my sister in Lake Jackson(about 30min outside of Houston) Coming back to Dallas we always take Interstate 45 west which turns into Interstate 75, there aren't any exits it's a straight shot and the drive takes about 3 1/2 hours depending on traffic and how fast you're going. Good luck & safe traveling!

It takes about 3.5 hours. The best route is I-45.
See the following for a map: http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=m&maxp=location&q2=Dallas,+TX&q1=Houston,+TX&trf=0&lon=-95.630493&lat=30.514949&mag=11

about 4 hrs...depending on traffic and construction.
Go straight up I-45
But, of course, the safest and fastest way is to go to Hobby Airport and hop on a Southwest Flight....and you're in Dallas in 40 minutes.

it's about 5 hours if there is no traffic. If you go to mapquest.com it will give you a more accurate number, but I would suggest adding in about 30 - 60 mins when you do travel just incase there is traffic.
