Depends what you mean by "serious". I think there are 2 kinds of serious people on this website:
1. People who love helping other people and also get a buzz when they know the right answer.
2. People who are highly competitive in all aspects of their lives. They want to see their name in the list of top answers, either overall or for the week. Kind of like playing mall games where the name of the highest scorer is displayed on each game.
Some of these competitive people really want to help. You can tell by their percentage of 'best answers' who these people are (greater than 20%). Then there are the people who leave quick answers or non answers just to get 2 points. These people have a very low percent of best answers (1%- 3%).
