America is not really like the Roman Empire. The Romans dominated the Mediterranean region, but even at their greatest extant, did not significantly hold Arabia, the Middle East, much less the equally impressive civilizations of India, China and Mezo-America.
If America were an empire like the Romans, the Iraq war would have been conducted far differently.
An army of Americans would invade, and an army of mexican illegals would be imported to pump the oil and deliver it directly to American interests.
Iraqi men would be killed and Iraqi women and children would be sold into slavery.
If America were like Rome, there would still be slavery.
You have to be careful with weak or sloppy metaphors, they can only be used to illustrate a comparison so far before they become misleading rather than insightful.
America will never be conquored, but it may some day become tired and withdraw from greatness, like the British before it.
Within my lifetime? No.
Within your obviously younger one? Perhaps, but not until you are a great grandmother at least.

Certainly has similar characteristics.
Although leaders are not as wierd as some of the Roman Rulers, they do appear idiotic at times and not trustworthy.
The Roman Empire took approximately 1300 years before it fell into various pieces and became insignificant.
This empire is based on false information and inflating the national debt, year after year.
Eventually, that could spell the end.
It will take time, it can take a long time.

Look, empires rise and fall. But let's be realistic and Im not Bush fan, but lets not be knee-jerks either. There are no empires today the way there were. YES, larger wealthier countries have spheres of influence. It will always be that way. Even at local goverment levels, smaller townships are often plagued by turf wars of larger municipalities because control= security and money.
Im a liberal, but I recognize that the world is a dangerous place and it is our governments job to have spheres of control and influence to keep us safe as possible. The problem comes when an administration so flagrantly does whatever the eff it wants with no real respect for law and not out of real concern for the country but for lining there own pockets.
America is not Rome, we never were. Secular government is the hope of the future of mankind. We're nto perfect, but we're damn good and we've got good people.

It's possible. Rome (and Greece) both degenerated into human-worship before they fell.
Rome literally elevated its ruler to god (Caesar), who was literally worshipped. I have seen some similarities from liberals who want to blame Bush for everything from typhoons, hurricanes, global warming, terrorist attacks, poverty, and the latest: setting up 9-11.
The missing ingredient is a liberal president who will take on this job. Until then, we're not quite like the Romans. Christianity, not humanism, is still our religion of choice.

No we should be but there are too many whining liberals to let the country start conquering other nations and adding them to our empire. The best we can do is to let people everywhere see that our system works better than their system and hope that they will want to emulate us. It will be a long long time before America as we know it falls.

Rome had culture. Romans were highly cultured people. They admired and respected cultures that were "above" their own.
They despised all things barbaric, but even so they tried to bring "barbaric" peoples to civilization. They civilized. They lent their writing system and language to underdeveloped peoples.
NOW, ATTILA'S HUNS...
They looted, raped and destroyed almost every nation they soiled with their dirty sole. They brought nothing but destruction, death, and a lack of respect for other peoples' identities. They were loot-driven and the more the spoils the better for them.
NOW YOU TELL ME; WHO'S AMERICA MORE LIKE?
