I haven't had a period in over a year. My hormones dropped and my doctor discovered that I have PCOS. My husband and I are trying to conceive, so my doctor put me on 50mg Clomid. Most other women I have talked to with the same problem say they only get pregnant on 150mg. Has anyone gotten pregnant on 50mg?

I got preg on 100 mg. The first month was 50 mg and I didn't conceive, then the second month I did on 100 mg. Everyone is different, but I had good luck, better than some. I know someone that took Clomid for well over a year and still didn't get preg. I have PCOS too. I hope that your doc got you back on track with your periods the right way, and not with progesterone. Diabetic meds are what's really needed to get someone with PCOS on the right track, and then after birth you still need to keep up with an endocrinologist. Also, make sure that your gyno doesn't make the same mistake mine did. For some reason he didn't realize that I had PCOS, too busy or something, but anyway, I didn't get my glucose tollerance test until my 3rd trimester and had full blown gestational diabetes that I needed to be on insulin to control. Someone with PCOS is almost guaranteed to have gestational diabetes, and should be screened in the first and second trimesters. Make sure you mention this to your doc when you do conceive.

Generally the protocol with Clomid is to start you out on the minimum dosage - 50mg. If this dose does not cause you to ovulate, they may increase it to 100mg the following cycle. If it still doesn't work, they will either increase it again, or try another solution.

A lot of women with PCOS will not respond to Clomid. If this is the case, you have some options. One option is to use injectible medications to induce ovulation, such as Follistim.

Another option is Ovarain Diathermy. This is a laproscopic surgery where they drill holes in your ovaries to stimulate them to function on their own. In about 70% of cases, ovarian diathermy will result in spontaneous ovulation. Of the 30% who do not spontaneously ovulate, about half will then respond to Clomid when they did not prior to the surgery. This gives you about an 85% chance of achieving ovulation (PS - I had this done and was in the 70% for whom it worked).

If you have PCOS you should be on Metformin as well as the Clomid. Metformin helps with the insulin resistance part of PCOS, and often helps you respond better to the clomid. You should also be seeing a reproductive endocrinologist (RE for short) rather than an Obgyn. PCOS is an endocrine (hormone) disorder, and most Obgyn's are not very effective at treating it.

Good luck!

My OB always started me out at 50mg. I got pregnant the very first month on it (unfortunately, I miscarried). It took me 8 months after that to conceive again. By the time I conceived I was up to 250mg. However, during my 7th month ttc, my OB discovered I had endometriosis and removed it, so that could've been the reason I wasn't conceiving.

I am on 50 mg. again ttc. This is my 3rd month. This time my OB is doing ultrasounds each month to check my ovaries to make sure that I am ovulating. She said the lower the dosage of Clomid, the better because Clomid can thin your lining.

Is your doctor having you chart your temp, using an ovulation kit, or doing ultrasounds to see if you're ovulating?

Be aware of Clomid baby !!! If taken for prolonged period (say 12 months ) you risk an ovarian cancer. Both my mum and sister developed 2 breast lumps after 6 weeks taking it.

The medicines dosage is probably prescribed by the level of the hormones detected in the body. Maybe the other women u talked to have lower level hormones so they need a higher dosage.

I took the 50 mg and it did what it was supposed to...I got pregnant twice. I didn't have pcos...I had been on the depo shot and it had stopped ovulation. Try the 50 mg for a couple of cycles...they test you during your cycle to see of you ovulated...if you did...then there is no reason to make the dose higher.
