You can always make another one:
On your desktop right click goto "New" and "Shortcut".
Type: shutdown -s -f
Right click the new icon and click properties, click "Change Icon" you may get an error, click "Ok" and then select the big red shutdown icon.
You can then drag the shortcut onto your quick launch right next to "Start", that'll Pee that Start button off.

You are starting the shutdown process. But seriously if it bugs you that much, put a little post-it on your monitor in the bottom right corner until Windows Vista comes out - it has NO start button! It has a shiny little orb thingy.

So you can 'start' to shutdown.
You could always rename the start button to something else if you wanted (with a bit of modifying explorer.exe)
