cd - compact disc
rom - read-only memory
In older time, when comparing to Laser Disc (hope you know that this product existed), the current CD is so much smaller, so it is called a compact disc.
Also, in not that so old time, but still quite old time, CD is only read-only. There is no simple technology to create a CD, not like nowaday CD Writer, DVD writer. So it can only be read, cannot write. So it is call ROM.

CD -ROM stands for Compact disc Read Only Memory
CD-ROM is a type of media that can be played in a CD Drive. (by playing i mean readable).
other type of media include CD-R CD -RW
Audio CD , Photo CD etc.
the contents of CD-ROM are un changebale. that's why they are called (readonly only memory rom),
A cd burner is used to burn cd-r cd-rw.
CD-R is write once media , u can only write data once . and read it many times
wehere as CD-RW allows u to over write the previous data stored on the disc

A CD-ROM is a Compact Disc - Read-only memory. It's a storage device that only allows you to read (view) the data stored on it. A CD-R (CD-recordable) allows you to record onto it too.
Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD_ROM for a more detailed description.
Hope this helps!

Compact Disc - Read Only Memory.
Basically you can retrieve information from it but not add or alter what is already on the disc.
