No question that either are excellent exercises, and generally non-strenuous for someone who is 'overweight'. What you may find is that bike riding, either stationary or not, may be easier on your joints. Typically riding has less impact on knees and hips, which can be painful or strenuous on knees and hips in people who are carrying too much weight. I find using an elliptical rider is very comfortable and great exercise as well.

Riding a bike or swimming are the two exercises that do not put a lot of stress on your joints. You'll obviously need a sturdy bike, but your knees will take a real pounding from walking. In either case, start with just a few minutes at a time and work up to 30 minutes or more a day. Another thing to remember is that you only get benefits from exercise you actually do, so any exercise you enjoy is better than one you do not enjoy, as you'll stick with it longer.

Riding a bike is probably better. Although both will expend energy, there will be less stress on his joints if he rides a bike. However, he needs to pedal briskly for at least 20 minutes before he'll get any real benefit.

Walking would be good...bike riding allows you to coast which is not excerise.

If he wants to lose weight, I would actually recommend...if at all possible, swimming. This would be the least amount of stress on his body and it would work his whole body as opposed to just his lower body.

Doctor's recommend walking and I agree it's good. As for weight loss though....I've seen too many heavy-set mail carriers to believe that walking is great for weight loss. Good for weight management...but I don't think for loss.

One has to really get one's heart rate up to start burning fat, so if walking is the only option...make sure he walks at a brisk pace.

Hope that helps.

John

I'm an avid mountain biker.. but i have to say you probably won't have much fun on a bike at that weight.. maybe a stationary bike.. but you would be risking injury on a street/mountain bike at that weight... I'd say walk or stationary bike till you get down to 250ish.. then you can start thinking about mountain/street biking.

Walk, thats the best thing you can do right now. Walk alot, and cut out those carbs and sugars. Stay disiplined and itll work.

The weight will begin to come off, especially if youre watching your diet, but keep walking. Good Luck. I wish you the best!

That would have to be a really sturdy bike with heavy duty tires. Go for a walk!

he should walk on the walking machine at the gym where he can be monitored.

if he walks on hard pavements he needs to wear running shoes to reduce the effect on his knees of the jolt of each step.

Either one is good so long as he isn't riding/walking to Krispy Kreme.
