It's taking an image of the whole drive, all the partitions, operating system etc and duplicating that information onto a new (usually bigger) drive. You usually connect both drives to your system and clone the old to the new.

You need special software to do this- it's not something you can do just do by using commands in Windows- in fact most cloning software boots from a CD.

Two of the most popular software programs for cloning are Ghost (from Symantec) and Copy Commander (from V-COM). Ghost is very popular with corporations because it allows you to store images on other media, like DVDs or external USB hard drives, for permanent backup.

Powerquest DriveImage was the best program for straight drive-to-drive cloning, but I think it's discontinued (Powerquest may be out of business?)

Hard disk cloning is a method of copying an entire hard disk (or just single partitions therein) to a single file. The file can then be used to replicate one PC to multiple others.

There are some gotchas, the receving hard disk has to be large enough (duh) and the PC has to be very similar or exactly the same in hardware makeup as the source PC.

The benefits are that you can spend time installing and configuring one PC, image it and then use the image to clone hundreds of others in very little time. Saves having to manually install everything on each PC.

Also very useful for backing up your precious PC.

There are several big providers of cloning technology, I have personally used PowerQuest DriveImage, Symantec Ghost and LANDesk.

Try looking for Ghost on the Symantec website. They are manily aimed at the corporate clients.

For home use check out PowerQuest DriveImage.
