Harold and the purple crayon, where the sidewalk ends, Curious George and Goodnight Moon (Preferably read out loud by Christopher Walken.) LOL... Anything by Dr Seuss, Where the wild things are and Winny The Pooh and no one can forget the incomparable Alice through the looking glass... But most kids read that when they get a little older...

There are a few more... but these are my all time favorites.

Enid Blyton definately, especially the Famous Five...they may be a bit dated but they are superb!

The Giving Tree. It's a wonderful book, deeply moving and displays what unconditional love truly is.

Failing that - I'd go for His Dark Materials trilogy for older children
and Wind in the Willows for younger children, oh and Paddington Bear!

Honestly it depends on the age of the child.

But I like Where The Wild Things Are, anything by Shel Silverstein, and Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys.
