That's a very complicated issue - movie credits are dictated by extremely complex contracts between the studios, the production companies, the agents representing the actors, directors and writers, and all the unions representing each of the specific crafts involved (Screen Actor's Guild, Director's Guild, American Society of Cinematographers, etc.) as well as the Motion Picture Association of America. These contracts can become so convoluted that they've led to credit for people's contributions being removed from the picture itself, as well as their contributions being edited out as well. It may seem silly to us, but these people's careers (and egos) are largely riding on their credits, so the way these credits are arranged is crucial. You've seen several television shows where the two lead actor's names are staggered in the credits with one actor lower-left and one actor upper-right, this is done so that one actor is listed first top-to-bottom and the other actor is listed first left-to-right. This practice received public attention when both Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams refused to do "Laverne and Shirley" unless they were billed first. You've probably seen that recent television ads for new movies coming out don't list the actors or director but simply refer you to the movie's website - this is because if they list one or two names, they are required by contract to list all the names that are required to be listed on the poster. You may have noticed that the lettering in newspaper ads for movies often include letteting that is unnaturally tall and skinny - this is because the WIDTH of type the advertisers are allowed to use is dictated by just such a contract - they can't make the lettering wider, but they can make it taller. George Lucas quit the Director's Guild because they fined him $1,500.00 for putting the credits for STAR WARS at the end of the movie instead of the beginning, and threatened to fine him $1 Million when he announced his plans to begin EMPIRE STRIKES BACK the same way.
If you're just doing a school project, follow the example of several movie posters, this will get you pretty close, and you hopefully won't fall afoul of the M.P.A.A.
