Your cheapest, easiest way to isolate the problem is to hook up another monitor to your computer. If it displays normal, then it is your vid card.
It could also be a loose connection. Check the plug in the back of the tower.

This sounds like a problem with the monitor. Make sure all the connections are tight and secure.
However, it might possibly be the video card is slightly loose and not making full contact. You can check this by shutting off your computer, unplug the system, remove the side panel using two screws on the back of the computer that holds the side panel in place, then you can check the video card to make sure it is secure. Reverse this process to get things back up and running again.
But I'm almost certain that the problem would lie in the monitor.
Good luck.

I would bet that it is the monitor. If it is getting to be seven years old, it is getting past it's useful life.
I just bought some Viewsonic 19" flat panel LCD monitors for a friend of mine for $185.99 each. They are really awesome.
Yes, you can buy an old fasion CRT type monitor for less that will last 7 years, but the low power LCD flat panel can last 20 years or more. Using less power and lasting longer means that they will cost you LESS in a long run.
Check it out, and look at the REVIEWS

Check the monitor cable is seated properly. Hook up the monitor to another computer to see if same problem happens again. If yes, then you need a new monitor. If it only happens on that particular computer, then it might be the video card that needs to be replaced.

You may have some magnets ( woofers, magnetized devices ) close to the monitor.
Make sure there are not any magnetic device close to it.
