ITS NOT YOGA! Joseph Pilates was born in 1880 in Dusseldorf, a sickly child with rheumatic fever, rickets and asthma. In an effort to improve his health he studied many forms of exercise, which included yoga, Thai chi, gymnastics and body building, ( to which end, by the time he was 14, he was in such fine shape that he was modelling for anatomical charts! ). Taking elements from these methods of exercise, he created his own system. He used to teach a combination of both floor based and equipment based exercises- the equipment repertoire coming from his time as an intern in a British prison camp during the 1st World War - and he used the inmates beds and springs to form a resistance machine, now known as the reformer, which the men could perform his exercises on. His method has several integral principals which include concentration, centering, control, fluidity, precision - every movement is done slowly and with total focus on what you're doing, in order to achieve a mind body connection and a perfect execution of the exercises. It has an incredible strengthening effect, particularly of the core muscles of the abdomen and spine, and also the limbs, creating long, lean strong muscles. Classes today are usually split into mat or equipment. He taught, along with his wife Clara, in New York, up until his death in 1967.

Ballet dancers have used the technique for ages it builds the core strength that means the muscles running across the abdomen it teaches you how to hold your body in alignment and not slouch, personally I love it have been doing for about a year and it has made a big different you do not have to use the machines as the exercise are also mat based.

An exercise system that concentrate on strengthening and maintaining core muscle stability.
Your "core" muscles are the ones that provide a stable base against which you move your limbs, they are your diaphragm; abdominal muscles (particularly transversus abdominus - the strap-like muscle that crosses your lower abdomen), your pelvic floor muscles and your back muscles.
If your core muscles are weak or inefficient, all movements can throw strain into your back and pelvic joints.
Pilates teaches you to an awareness of your core muscles, and teaches you how to exercise in a controlled manner.
Excellent for most chronic back problems - but check with your doctor first.
Excellent exercise system all round really... have a go!

Similar to yoga, it increases flexibility and improves posture. More toning than exercise though.
