And no, I can't drop the class.
Here's what happened: last Monday I had lab with him...and when I went up to him at the end of the period to hand in my lab from last week which was due that day, he said he can't accept it from me. why? because 'it was due at the beginning of the period, not the end.' I was so frustrated! I worked so hard on the lab....I told him I didn't hear him say that, but all he said was "too bad."
what should I do now? should I talk to him again? i'm afraid that'll just get him even more annoyed at me. to anyone that's wondering, we only do 10 labs this semester, do you think I can still do well in the class with a 0? (i'm going to lab around 1:00 today so any advice before that is greatly appreciated!)

no, it's not on the syllabus! all it says on the syllabus is that labs will not be accepted IF LATE. (but now technically is my lab late? it's been a week.)

First, I would look to see if it's on the syllabus. If it's not, then demand he take the lab report, b/c you handed it in on time. The fact that he claims he mumbled something about the beginning of class is unacceptable, for the very reason that it obviously wasn't heard by anybody.
Be firm but polite, that you are not asking for special treatment or anything unreasonable. He had no time to grade other lab reports, so yours is in the stack just like everyone else's.
Second, if he won't budge, make an appointment w/ the Dept Chair or the Dean. I have found that most professors don't want the hassle of it all, and will fold on an issue like this. Actually, I saw professors fold on issues where they were in the right and the student was very wrong (copied lab reports handed in after the others graded and returned!)
Finally, be very careful to document all future events and discourse w/ this professor. Keep your tests, quizzes and labs w/ the scores written on them.
I graduated from a college w/ a very abusive and hostile faculty. It was a waste of my time and money. Very innapropriate, and I don't like seeing it repeated.

I can't help but think this isn't the whole story but ...
Ask again, TODAY.
Check your course syllabus. If it says that labs are due on the day listed you may have a case. If it says labs must be handed in prior to the start of class, you'll have to throw yourself on his mercy. If it doesn't say anything about labs you may still have a chance.
Like I said, ask him again, nicely. Don't get abusive, stay professional. If he still refuses, take your case to the department chairman. Let him know at the end of your discussion that you intend to do that. Of course if it says in the syllabus that labs are due at the start of class you have little or no chance except to ask for mercy.
Remain professional, crying isn't professional. Although. hmmm perhaps.

you are not the only one who's having a bad chem proff.. i too have got a really bugging one..
I tackle him by keeping him happy by doing (trying to do rather) his stuff on time.. still he's pissed off at me because i'm always late in the class atleast 3-4 mins in every chem class...
try talking to him.. control your anger.. because anger does no good.. india's father of the nation also did this ... he won india the freedom by just non-violence...in your case non-violence is being polite... u know what when u shout at someone, you show that you are psychologically weak.. try to remain calm.. and the BIG BOSS at the top will be there doing the rest... ;-)

get to class a few minutes early and just be like, "again, i'm sorry for the misunderstanding last week, but this class is really important to me and i would hate to start out the semester with a 0." Also, if the teach has office hours, definitely go to them, they love that!

Since you have missed an assignment...all you can do is do the rest of the required assignments and ASK for any extra work that can be done to improved your standing in the class....BE PROFESSIONAL with him, and act like your serious about passing his class.
If that doesn't work...then go to his office everyday and ask for an assignment...make him remember you...

You pronounced she is condescending? perhaps somebody needs to stand as much as her and with politeness tell her which you men are actually not paying her gross sales to be humiliated by ability of her and which you pay the costly training to check (something SHE is failing to do). yet for now, you may could study stuff on your very own.
