Regardless of what people say, crunches and sit-ups only build up your muscles behind the stomach fat which actually makes you look fatter. The best thing to do is to hang from a bar and use your abs (not your legs) to pull you legs up as high as you can. Your muscles won't get tired very quickly so keep doing it until you can no longer physically do it. Just keep telling yourself "five more" You should be able to see results by the end of the week if you do it enough.
P.S. if you do not have professional supervision, that whole thing about restricting your stomach with a waist band or whatever could be very dangerous. BE CAREFUL!!! It could get to the point where you can't breathe when you take it off. Good luck.

While sit ups are a good exercise, they're not the most effective. Try a workout like Pilates or any kind of tae bo type ab tape. This will work all of the muscles of your midsection so you don't miss any. There's a big difference between toning your stomach and toning your core and these kinds of exercises will work your midsection all the way around. Yoga is a good way to tone muscles with how much balancing you'll do during a routine, but it's not a fast way to see results.

The best way to tone your stomach is to do sit-ups everyday. It doesn't have to be 100, just like 40 or 50 a day. It will only talk 1 or 2 minutes. After a while it'll get easier, then you just add 10 or 20 more. Start at a number that is easy. Then work your way up.

There's some good answers here - here's what I like to do:
The easiest thing to do without any equipment is pikes - lie on the ground with your arms above your head and lift your arms and legs at the same time, touching your toes at the highest point. Do this nice and slow (don't throw your weight up) and it'll do you well. This is akin to simple leg-raises, which are MUCH better than sit-ups (useless) or crunches (pretty good). Hanging leg raises are also pretty good. However, this won't work all of your stomach, only the main abdominal muscle that goes down the center of your belly (rectus abdominis) - you need to do some bicycle movements (crunches where you touch your elbow to the outside of your opposite knee) to work your oblique muscles.
If that's child's play for you, try some of these things for REALLY good workouts:
* Reverse wall crawl - start from a standing position, facing away from a wall about two feet in front of it. Lean backwards, place both hands against the wall, and SLOWLY and CAREFULLY walk your hands down the wall until you are in a bridge. Then walk your way back up, again very slowly, trying to use your abs instead of your hands. As you get stronger, you will be able to do this better and better, until eventually you will be able to do it without the wall at all, which is ideal. If you twist to one side as you get up, you'll also work oblique muscles, which is great. DO NOT attempt these unless you can do a bridge - get someone to spot you the first few times until you're confident you can do it by yourself. One of these is worth a dozen crunches.
* Crocodile walk - get in a push-up position, down, and try to crawl forward like a crocodile, without letting your body touch the ground. Stay as low as you can. These are killer and will rip you up in no time.

Wow, there are alot of answers! All of my life I have had a toned stomach, I have achieved this partly by reverse sit ups and regular sit ups while crunching, and partly by "sucking it in"-and holding for several minutes periodically throughout the day. I have gotten so used to it I can now talk and hold it in at the same time. No one can tell when or even if I am doing it, it is amazingly effective!

Planks. They work best because they work the entire stomach. Lay on the floor on your stomach. Get up on your forearms and your toes, as if you're doing a push up. Hold that as long as you can. Keep increasing the time. After it gets easier alternate, two legs, right leg, two legs, left leg. I couldn't see my muscles in my gut until I did these. I'm up to a 4 pack with the other 2 starting to appear. It takes about 3 months.

this answer will not play out will if you have like a bell curve of variables, mind over matter is here if you can supply it, also get a really expensive waste band and back support combo that has the fexibility you need. the extra precaution in the belt is to develope in side your waste line. most people want to slim downand learn way to late that you put a limit on what your stomach looks like now. in gymnastics it all or nothing so we get it right the first time, the more you can wrap up your stomach and keep it flexable and do all kinds of stuff you can do this all the time if you can apply under your clothes to compress against so you are more like changing who you are rather than an exercise thing you wan to be the shape you want so the flex suport wasrew band that can pull tight and be under your bottom ribs so the ribs can't get under the waste wraps that's a lot of pressure but see is you want to poiwer move your inerds to where you want them now it done so when you want the muscles moved the leg works over and the wraps stay on for the next part of being confortable with it and it will controll your eating to you'll achive a balance of restricted movement and eating comfort should change so that you get more comfort able with a lighter food intake and then your on your own to check out if you have food allergies and be the time youread your way in and out of the you willhave the diet part and the eassy part is that sound complicated but you want fast and 24x7 is not bad, people who don't contain their stomach when doing sit ups get what looks like a rubber blown stomach that why all this support stuff i'm explaing works because they all see the bulging rubbery stomach when they sit up and this way you don't have it from the start you are supporting and setting your back in position you supported and it can give you the better results.
